Another successful cotton industry charity golf day |
|
20 August 2009
More than 120 people teed off at this year’s Macintytre Valley Cotton Industry Charity Golf Day on a beautiful Autumn day, proving to be a lot of fun and raising funds for local students.
While the proceeds from the day are still being tallied up, the events organizers are more than happy.
President of the Macintyre Valley Cotton Field Day committee David Kelly said funds raised by this event over the past seven years have injected over $35,000 towards the Goondiwindi State High School Student Bursary.
“Potentially we would have raised more this year because the numbers were up – it’s great for the student bursary and a good day out for the golfers”.
The Bursary was created seven years ago by the local cotton industry in consultation with then principal Alan Smith and funded mainly by the local councils, the cotton industry and the high school P & C. The Bursary has so far supported seven local students through university studies in pursuits ranging from engineering to teaching to agronomy.
Goondiwindi State High School principal Brett Hallett thanked the cotton industry for their support and said not many country towns the size of Goondiwindi can boast a student bursary as attractive as this.
Major sponsor of the event, Cargill Cotton’s Phil Sloan said events like this were important to get all those involved in the industry to get together, have a good time and raise some funds for the community.
“The cotton industry relies on local, skilled people, and the bursary is helping to make this happen”, Phil Sloan said.
The overall winners of the four person Ambrose event was the team of Brett Corish, Mike Beeston, Craig Salmon and Tobin Cherry.
